AMJ and NaNoWriMo

NaNoWriMo, aka, National Novel Writing Month, is a fun project I've been fooling around with for a few years. You basically write a novel in a month, hopefully equaling 50,000 words by November 30th. The results are often mixed, but in the end you get a piece of work that you've created and can cut and paste into something better. I'm off by a thousand words right now but I've still got til Midnight tonight, right? Anyway, I just felt like throwing this up here on the blog before we get into December. Got a lot of stuff going on..

Excerpt from The Doorman's Apprentice: NaNoWriMo 2009

Even in the dim light of the marquee sign, I could see the smoke from his cigarette curling in the breeze. He was a quick smoke, he had to be. Someone would come up, waiting to get in the door and he'd hurl it to the ground in order to keep traffic going smooth. Even a two person pile up inside the door could cause a lot of trouble. In between huffs he'd talk about different goings on, a few complaints about people who had apparently never been asked to show i.d. before, how this band sucked and how my taste in music ranged from the completely awesome to the incredibly bad.

I never felt more at home than when I was leaned up against the cold brick walls, hands stuffed in my jacket, fingering the little hole in the pocket from the time when it got snagged climbing over the graveyard fence. I could listen to the chatter around me for days, never saying a word. I like talking as much as the next person but sometimes you just get tired of talking about the weather. If they recognize me from the paper, I might as well forget it. Expected to spout off the latest and greatest about music at the drop of a hat. Not a horse and pony show.

But as usual, I can't help it. Residual guilt from being paid to give my opinion gets the best of me. Sure, I'll listen to your pitch. Leave the cd for me at the usual spot. I enjoy it from time to time but tonight is just not your night, bub. He leaves to go set up for his gig and I shift awkwardly on the stool. Somehow managed to get stuck on an usual spot in the wall. I pull my cap over my eyes a little more and feign a headache.

"Did ya hear about the Print Shop?" the doorman asks. He knows me well. Knows my fake headache signal even better. Passes me a PBR and an empty Tylenol wrapper.

"What happened this time?"

"Some fan broke in again. They had to padlock the doors but talk's struck up again about just tearing it down. It's too dangerous."

I open one eye and look skeptically out from under my hat. "Don't they threaten to do that every year? To almost everything?"

He chuckles and turns to the next customer, reading her i.d. and stamping her on the hand. From the looks of her, she's managed to wander in from a sorority house. I'm half tempted to start up a Phi Mu Delta cheer just to see how she'll respond. I catch a small glare from my friend. Yeah, that plan is done for now.

"I figure they'll really be after the city to tear it down this time though," he muses as he lights up another cigarette. "Those idiots actually went upstairs."

I shake my head in disbelief. It's one thing to want to climb into that building. Hell, most of us have at some point. But that second floor is caving in. Even the mice avoid it. To try and walk across that floor is tempting fate. I wince a little as the scar running up my arm seems to tingle and burn as a reminder that fate is not one to be messed with.

"Damn fools," I say.

"Yeah. Police say that they think those fools found something though."

Well that was new. Nothing in that building but old printing supplies and a bunch of old photos. I leaned in closer. Figures that he'd have my attention now. "Really?"

"Yeah."

"What did they find?"

Black Friday? Shop Your ATH Off!

Ah, the holiday season has begun. We've eaten far too much turkey, watched far too much football, and now we'll all go and get far too stressed out about what to buy for the loved and liked and barely tolerated ones in our lives. Shopping is annoying, it's true. But no more Christmas Griping! Shopping can be fun! All you have to do is avoid those huge box stores and go local. With Flagpole sweetening the deal with a chance for $100 in gift certificates, you really can't afford not to try!

Now, we're all about the giving spirit here at AMJ. But we're also all about the local too. It should come as no surprise that we're doing most of our holiday shopping with Athens businesses. There wouldn't be an Athens music scene without Athens itself! And let's face it, many of us owe our paychecks to local businesses.

So you want the newest release from some obscure indie band. I'd head on down to Wuxtry Records or the equally awesome and nearby SchoolKids Records (which isn't completely local but I love it and the people there are local at least!). Vinyl junkies will lean towards the former while cd hounds will like the latter. If you can't make up your mind what you want to buy, both offer really nifty gift certificates that come in handy when something finally strikes your fancy.

Maybe you're in the mood for something interesting, odd, or hard to find. We've got enough specialty and antique stores to make anyone happy. Spend a few hours in Agora or Junkman's Daughter's Brother and you may end up walking away with a Felix the Cat phone, tons of clothing, and a few lamps. There are SO many awesome shops and hideaways downtown that you're bound to find something for everyone on your list. There's a great list of stores here at the Official Downtown Athens site.

For out of towners with the Athens bug, might I suggest quenching your music cravings via Athensmusic.net? They've got just about everything you could ask for. Pylon t-shirts? R.E.M. Dvds? Random stickers and stuff? It's all there. Or maybe start saving up for that pilgrimage to A-town that you've been meaning to take. Possibly around the time of Athfest 2010? Or to come throw down with a few of us around Aprilish?

Anyway, I'm just throwing this out there to ya. There's tons of great stuff to see and do around town in December. Maybe we'll see ya downtown...

Believe in Memories

Some long time ago, I found a band that I loved called the Sleepy Horses. They let me follow them around, played to me at the Caledonia, signed a promo copy of "Golden Light" that I now keep on the stereo, and then left. The band underwent a lot of changes. Band members came and went, projects were started, relationships changed, and it had been a long time since I'd seen any of the band.

Then one day Nic and I found each other on Facebook. He's out in the country now but maybe one day the Horses will play again or release some new material. It's on a semi-hiatus for now. But that's fine by me. Why? I just had the chance to fall back into the music of the Sleepy Horses and it brought back memories and feelings of a vastly different time, even though it was only about two years ago. I pressed play on my cd player and closed my eyes.

It was a cold night at the Caledonia. I stood under the heater as best as I could, back pressed against the cold wall, hands rubbing together in a feeble attempt to create warmth. I could see my breath and my head itched under my hat. My WUOG hoodie, newly purchased at that point, was thicker but still was not enough to provide any sort of shield against the cool air. The Caledonia was dim, as usual, lit only by the band display by the doorman, the lights of Farm above, and the string of little bulbs around the Horses' merch.

The Horses were theatrical from the beginning, carrying a fog machine, lights, and a lot of pedals with them wherever they roamed. As hypnotic as the sounds were, the one thing that always brought me back to attention was that little sign on the drums: Believe.

It's one of those hokey little things, almost kitsch, like the little figures that you see in some old lady's living room that read "Faith. Hope. Love." But there's a power behind those words. We've diluted them into the wallpaper of our lives, much like music itself, stripping them of power and not noticing them. Just figures on a wall. On a drumkit. Random graphics that are meant to take up space on a wall.

Believe. "Believe in what?" I wonder. The epic sounds of "Lights" are pounding down the walls, echoing into and out of the room. It's a pounding rhythm, driving you towards something, guitar chiming and swirling. The light shines all around, just like in the song. "When I Go" nearly brings me to tears. I don't belong... But you know it's hard to leave you when I go, don't you know it's hard to leave you when I go...It doesn't matter that I'm the only other one there for this show. I would've felt like I was alone anyway.  My eyes are closed, taking in every single note. Heart beats are drum beats. The lights are just distant memories.

It's an incredible thing to experience, giving yourself to a song. There's nothing that matters in that moment. Not jobs, not worries, nothing. You're just letting go of everything and believing. Because sometimes, despite all that you've done, all you have, and all that you know, all you can do is believe.

Out of Athens: The Music Will Follow

I grew up in the middle of freakin' nowhere Georgia where even the names R.E.M. and Widespread Panic were rarely heard during my childhood. It's always a mindwarp coming back here for holidays. Everyone's older, places I used to love have closed down, people are married and moved away... But what really gets me is how, suddenly, it seems that people are getting to know Athens as more than home of the Bulldawgs.

Take for instance my brother's boss. He's a pretty hip young guy. So maybe it wasn't that much of a surprise to hear that he's a Drive-By Trucker's fan. But the fact that a certain principle of a local school is a major Michael Stipe fan? That was a pleasant surprise indeed.

At my brother's art show this Saturday, I wandered around, running into people I haven't seen in a bit. They asked the usual questions (all seeming to be variations of "What are you doing with your life?" sigh) and when I mentioned Athens, a few of them really perked up. Especially when I mentioned interviewing the Zac Brown Band. They had seen the ZBB on the Country Music Awards

And that's when it hit me. There IS a small little thread that connects Athens to Hometown. It just has to be through a major breakthrough band, preferably country leaning. I doubt hometown is quite ready for Pylon and will probably never be ready for Of Montreal. That's a whole different type of crazy.

It's always a bit hard to describe to people what I do. The concept of getting paid to write about bands that no one outside of Athens has heard of is a difficult one to concieve (and, to be perfectly honest, a concept that I'm still in disbelief about myself).Usually, I just mumble something about being a journalist and leave it at that. Those who know exactly what I'm up to, by way of my mother, usually ask how I keep up with Athens while I'm away. Uh....

EMAIL. And Twitter/Facebook stalking. And a lot of advance planning. But it was really cool to be able to come back here and be able to talk music to other people for the first time and not get blank stares. Keep it up people, we'll have them humming "Crazy" yet!

Friday News Roundup

We reported that R.E.M. was one time zone over earlier this month (leaving New Orleans out of the report just for privacy's sake) but Stipey spilled the beans on REMHQ and posted the above video and this one as well. Hope you're having fun guys!

MICHAEL & VANESSA @ WUOG PODCAST
Click the link for the full Live in the Lobby/Sound of the City Show. Features PRIDE PARADE for about 35 minutes then it's Michael and Vanessa's DJ shift at WUOG. Their setlist is here.

If you've ever wanted a Christmas Caroler like no other to show up at your place, I'd recommend you take a peek at this here Homedrone post I did. Julian and his singing saw may be coming your way!

In sadder Athens news, UGA VII died suddenly on Thursday. The Bulldog mascot had only overseen one full season and most of this one before passing away suddenly from a heart attack. The Bulldawg nation is in shock, especially since it's been reported that there will be NO MASCOT at this weekend's game. Some fans are planning a spontaneous blackout for the Kentucky game.

And last but not least, I love my friends. They're a phenomenal and talented bunch. Not only did most of them wish me happy birthday on Facebook/Twitter, three of them conspired to create this. I honestly would not be here without y'all. Thanks for everything guys!

When I Was Young...

I always try to be cautious not to confuse a singer's intended meaning with what I take a song to be. Lifting lines is dangerous. Just the music writer in me I guess. But whatever. It's my birthday. And today, this song, every line, is mine.

Trust in your calling, make sure your calling's true. Think of others, the other think of you...

We'll return to our regularly scheduled programming tomorrow.

Michael & Vanessa at WUOG TONIGHT!!

Photo By Terry Allen, stolen from Facebook

Two of the most awesome people in the world are guest djaying on Sound of the City tonight! Pylon's Michael Lachowski and Vanessa Briscoe Hay are coming up to WUOG and will be spinning whatever the hell they want for an hour and a half or so. I'M SO EXCITED!

Michael's got his Young Foxy & Free thang going on while Vanessa's band Supercluster just released a kick-ass new album. We may talk about those projects for a bit and Chomp More. But mostly, I'll just be oogling over the fact that they're in the studio.  As always, I'll make sure to link back to the podcast once we get it broadcasting.

Sound of the City is the all local radio show I host on Tuesday nights from 8-10 p.m. at WUOG. Done it for years and have started each show off with a Pylon cut. Michael came up to the station once before to dj and we had such fun that I swore I'd get him back on the show! So here they are!

Best early birthday gift EVER.

Contest: Guess the Bands 3

Yup! My cd closet has once again gotten full and my inbox is in manageable condition for a bit so that means WIN ATHENS MUSIC! It's my birthday sometime this week so instead of me getting stuff, I figured I'd give y'all something instead for being awesome.

All you have to do is guess the names of the Athens bands in the above graphic and email your guesses to athensmusicjunkie@gmail.com with the subject CONTEST. Whoever gets all of them first or guesses the most correctly by 7 a.m. tomorrow morning wins some awesome cds. These are a bit harder since we had SO many entries last time. Good luck! If you need any help, I'd consult previous blogposts here on AMJ and Flagpole.

Hey You! Play Athfest 2010!

Dead Confederate and Manchester Orchestra play in a dumpster at Athfest (2009/Jordan Stepp)

Athfest. How I love thee. Thy massive, heaving throngs of humanity. The grim determination of the second stage bands. The near avoidance of heat strokes and heart attacks. The blessed, blessed music..

I was beyond thrilled to get to cover the festival last year but you know what would really make me happy? Seeing your band on the outdoor stage and/or reading your name on the Athfest compilation cd. Even if you don't give a rip about this blog, you should give a rip about getting your music out to the masses during one of the biggest Athens music events each year.

Bands are encouraged to send in material for the annual Athfest Compilation cd. Past offerings have included everyone from Widespread Panic to Vic Chesnutt to the Warm Fuzzies and beyond. You've got until Jan. 29th to get your act together and send in a shiny recording here.

If you'd also like to play outdoors, Athfest is now accepting bids via Sonicbids. I've seen firsthand how much merch gets moved and how many fans get made during and after these shows. You'd be a fool not to try. Here's hoping we'll see ya there!

CD Review: Timi Conley

I'm not even going to attempt to list all the projects and bands that Timi Conley's been involved in but I will point out that almost all of them involve his own brand of weirdness. Any man brave enough to wear a full on tight one piece hero outfit is sure to have some interesting things to say. He's his own brand of cool. The name of the record says it all: Nerd Sexy. The album release party is TOMORROW at LITTLE KINGS.

Artwork! I was surprised at how toned down this is. There's Mr. Tim "Pimp Yo" Conley on the back cover but other than that and the neon pink, it's a very bland cover. I was expecting something absolutely crazy. Oh well. Can't judge a record by its cover...

New Boyfriend is a short intro (:51) but it gives you a pretty good idea of what you're in for with the rest of the record. There's harmonies, some traditional guitar strumming, and a few random audio tidbits.

Te Amo (Gold Tooff) begins with birds tweeting happily and continues into a nice acoustic guitar and synth drum groove. Conley's voice stays sweet, almost in a whispery John Mayer mode. And there's your totally random comparison for the day. It ends with a crazy rap in a high pitched voice.

Words Must Die "8.9.10.12.11." Conley delivers a disjointed vocal here, speaking in broken phrases. The guitars stay blazing even with the video game type sound effects in the background.

Here Come th' Blues White crazy boy blues. I'll give props to the guitar playing and the production that actually sounds like Conley recorded this in a tin can studio about 70 years ago. Then he mentions "Baywatch." It's not like any blues recording you know.

Sex Dream More of the video game synth drumming but the subject matter is just hilarious. There's a really nice and deep bassline going on here. I wish he could have done some more crooning but oh well. A nice mostly instrumental piece.

Hi Skoo only makes me flinch because of the title. Must. Resist. Editing... The song's a fun little acoustic number from a kid's point of view. It actually reminds me of some of Chris McKay's stuff.

Gettn Bizy Another blues on crack (well, more crack) tune. Playing with guitar slides is fun peoples. Bizy then morphs into Conley loudly mumbling "Lorday" and the like into the microphone. There's still a lot of electronic elements towards the end of the song, keeping it in line with the other offerings on Nerd Sexy.

Help You is seven seconds of beauty. Then it's gone. *note sad face*

Still Vibration A really lovely, straight up guitar number. Conley's voice and guitar are front and center, giving you a chance to enjoy his songwriting chops without having to dig through other things. Bare boned and awesome. My favorite track.

It's Over features a lot of moaning of the title. It's just voices and just random fun for a little over 1:30.

Yellow Duck on a Golden Anvil is insane. Where to begin? The fact that it sounds like lounge music for Mad Men? Or that Conley could do a really good rendition of "Rock Lobster" if he wanted? It's a jam number that you can dance to. By the end, I wanted both a duck and strawberry scented shampoo. I'm still not quite sure why but I'm pretty sure it's ok.

Are Ya Feelin' the Love? A minute long drum and yelling session with some keyboard thrown in.

Can't Get Enuff Pure Timi. There's sampling, nice melodic bass, mentions of pancakes, and satellite cheesecake. It relies heavily on Conley's faster than you can think delivery and mind-boggling vocal samples. It's one of my faves from the record.

Even Though (:52) Violins and soft guitar. Really makes you wish that Conley would come out with another record that's just stuff like this. He can do crazy and he can do the intimate.

And Girl... A little bit of rap and a little bit of whispering. If you dig the stuff from Flight of the Conchords, this ending track is right up your alley.

And there we have it. Nerd Sexy isn't so much a cohesive album as a collection of songs from different parts of Timi Conley's mind. He only hints at his acoustic crooning power which is fine. The short interludes provide a break between the crazy fun of the other tracks.

Overall, I'd give it about a 7 out of 10. It's a great record to have if you're a Timi fan (or, more likely with the number of bands he's in, a collaborator). Best heard when leaving an Athens venue at 2 in the morning after dancing all night.

Tuesday Morning News Gathering

God. What a sucky week. On that note, there's a lot of random bits and pieces of news from around town that I figured I'd put out there.

WUOG: My beloved grey jacket and blue shirt are already last year's duds (!), so if you want some sweet new college radio swag, you can now order a t-shirt or hoodie! If you're in town, stop by Tate Center. If not, order over the telephone by calling (706) 542-8579 anytime between 9am-4pm on weekdays. There will be a $5 cost for shipping. Just make sure you tell the cashiers what you want to do and give them all your information.

Also of note, November 17th will be a freakin' awesome version of Sound of the City. We've got two ultra awesome guests coming up to dj. More on that closer to the day..

NUCI'S SPACE: Since the news broke that Nuci's is facing the possibility of having to pay property taxes, another story got published following up on the case. But it was just announced that they're gonna fight this. Nuci's Space has our full support and I'm thrilled that they're not just letting this go. It's an issue that delves into other non-profits as well. We'll be keeping an eye on this.

WIDESPREAD PANIC: Are returning to ATL for New Year's Eve (and the day before). Tickets are available here. And pseudo-critic Bob Lefsetz is apparently a big WP fan, judging by his blogpost from yesterday. But what's really worth noting is J.B.'s AMAZING Halloween costume. Sorry Mills, better luck next year. Photo by Colin Vereen, stolen from Facebook.

R.E.M.: Speaking of Mills, he and the rest of the band are one time zone over to the left recording some new stuff for the next album. Feedback from Olympia has been great and their video for "Imitation of Life" has been picked as one of Paste Magazine's top 50 of the decade. As has one from...

OF MONTREAL: The band that probably needed no help for Halloween costumes is off road for a teensy bit but the Late B.P. Helium will be playing Athens in December. Hoorah! They're probably tired from playing Fun Fun Fun Fest along with some fellow Athenians by the name of...

DEAD CONFEDERATE: Who are on tour overseas as of December 1. Still waiting on the new album. I've wondered how exactly that name goes over for the non-U.S. crowd. While we're on the theme of bands named after politically charged war movements of the United States...

THE WHIGS: Are also away from Athens until December. They're currently touring up and down the West Coast but will be flying into ATL (Playhouse) on December 4th.

And that about raps up the newsgathering for this morning. As always, you're invited to comment/email whatever news events you'd like to see up here. Later dudes.

Jerry Fuchs

Our town has already had too much mourning this year, yet we have been dealt another horrible blow. Jerry Fuchs, drummer for local Athens band Maserati, died in Brooklyn after falling down an elevator shaft. He was rushed to the hospital and passed away in the early Sunday morning hours.

News of his death quickly spread to his friends here in Athens via a long series of very sad Facebook updates and tweets. I cannot express how devastating this loss is. Fuchs was an incredible drummer, capable of playing any style and holding the audience in his hands the entire show. There was not a single time I saw him perform that I was not amazed. Besides drumming, he also did some illustrations for Chunklet, who posted that beautiful tribute to a dear friend. All of our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his band, and his many, many friends around the world.

Updates on memorial services and such will be posted as they come in.

Nuci's Space Loses Tax Ruling

In a disturbing bit of news yesterday, the Athens Banner-Herald reported that Nuci's Space had lost the property tax ruling that it's been fighting for a while now. The original decision, that Nuci's was exempt from the tax due to its status as a non-profit, was overturned. Reasoning behind the Court of Appeal's decision stemmed from Nuci's renting rehearsal space, being rented for parties, weddings, etc.

Hopefully, if you've been reading the blog, you already know a bit about Nuci's. The space was founded by Nuci's mom as a haven for musicians seeking mental health care, music advice, and other services. Funds from renting the space out go towards that purpose. Hell, the founder just received the key to the city last week! Man...

I'm still gathering the details but you can bet that I'm not letting this one go. I'll try to find out what is going on exactly and keep you updated, though it'll probably be via Flagpole. I'm reluctant to post any legal ramifications yet due to not having talked to the parties involved. That's coming up though.

I sit in the shadow of the steeple and watch people come and go from Nuci's almost every day. People are hurting and the organization is there to help. The last thing we need to do is to hinder that mission.

How to Save a Life This Friday

(Photo/Ziona Kocher)

Thanksgiving is coming up soon. It's a time for family and football, turkeys and television, parades and pigskins but there's that "Thanks" part that always gets to me.

I lead an extremely blessed life. Yeah, incredible things happen to me in this music world. You've read a few accounts of them here on this blog. Sure, I have phenomenal friends and family that support me. I would be nowhere without them. But I also have something that one billion people on this planet don't have: CLEAN WATER.

I got an email from our friends the Warm Fuzzies. Jason has joined the Goodfight (from ATL) in a project they're calling "Buy a Record, Save a Life."  The premise is simple. The guys joined up with CHARITY:WATER to help raise funds to provide safe drinking water to people in developing nations. You buy a copy of the Goodfight's record "Good & Evil" for $10 and that money goes to charity:water.

The band's goal is to sell 10,000 copies but honestly, anything helps! There's even going to be a kick-ass free show at Seney-Stovall Chapel on Friday featuring Leaving Araby, Pilot Coat and Jason Harwell (MCing yo!). So even if the music isn't really your type, I'd recommend at least giving charity:water a good looking over.

Welcome to the Hood

I LOVE when artists take up residency at a venue for a month so when I heard that Patterson Hood was playing the Caledonia three Wednesdays this month, I seriously almost lost my mind. Now I'm not going to re-cover everything that Flagpole's already said about the shows (in the interest of time, group sanity, and my paycheck..) but I thought that I should at least mention it today.

Last time I saw Mr. Hood, he was singing onstage with the Baseball Project. Was that really just last month? Wow. The time before that, I was sandwiched in between two of my Music Business colleagues at a Drive-By Truckers show at the 40 Watt. The insane amount of booze spilled on my jacket has caused the poor WUOG hoodie to carry the faintest scent of pot and whisky even after multiple washings. Beer soaked coats aside, it was a killer show, full of swagger and hometown pride.

The Caledonia shows may prove to be a bit quieter than a regular DBT gig. Hood is near solo and the songs will be coming off of his lone projects with a few other gems thrown in. Reminds me a tiny bit of those nights Buck used to do with his friends. Who'll show up at the Hood shows? I honestly have no clue but the man keeps good company so there's a good chance of some awesome pairings.

Tickets are $10 at the door so get yerself downtown early. I have a feeling these things will be kinda packed.

In An Aeroplane On Avery Island

Rejoice all ye Neutral Milk Hotel fans! Your prayers to St. Mangum have been answered! Your pleas for an audiophile copy of the beloved On Avery Island and In An Aeroplane Over the Sea have been heard by Merge Records. Verily, I beseech you dear brothers and sisters of the Elephant Six, at least cast your eyes upon the awesomeness that was, is, and will be the cult of NMH. Yes, today is that day!

The underground popularity of this band never ceases to amaze me. It's been something like 10 years since the band was around. Since that time, hopes and dreams of a reunion or even just seeing Mangum on anything even resembling a stage have not ceased! What is it about these songs, these incredibly strange melodies and lyrics, that keep us enthralled?

And Mangum, man, we wish he was still around. Athens has this way of pushing unique guys towards stardom (Stipe, Mangum, Barnes...) whether or not they stick around town, that's their own deal. At least we still have the Elephant 6 collective cluster o' bands.

But until our King of Carrot Flowers returns in some incredibly epic but completely unannounced way, we shall have to be content with these 180 gram vinyl reissues and dream of aeroplanes over the sea.

Sweet November Rain

  (Photo/Ziona Kocher)

I can be honest and answer plainly. Since November, it's been raining. It's raining in Athens.

- Azure Ray

I've been watching the maple leaves outside my window change ever so slowly from a bright green to yellow to a now deep red. The constant downpours of the past month have taken their toll on the native greenery. The sky, too, has seen better days, remaining an expressionless gray. A heavy mood hangs over the town, a quietness that only Autumn can bring. It seems like everything is being seen through a hazy filter. The grass seems duller, the train cars parked behind the campus are even more faded now, and the people appear older than they used to.

Fall comes and goes quickly here. The winter will be upon us soon. But for now, the trees stay clothed in burnt colors. And my mind turns to the music of the last months of Fall. As the year wears on, my songs become longer, less dynamic, and more haunting. Appalachia is king once more. The call of the mountains and hot apple cider beckon once more.

This is the season of Vic Chesnutt, Liz Durrett, and Don Chambers. Nate Nelson, the Vigilantes of Love, Sleepy Horses.. Wailing and haunting as the shortest season turns its face towards the coming Winter chill. We put away angular guitars and the dancing beats for this is no time for dancing. It's coming upon the time for reflection. So reflecting upon that, what are some of the best local artists for Autumn playlists?
