Behind the Songs via Youtube

One of the things that fascinates me the most about music is how it's created. Some artists create massive amounts of music with no problem. Others require weeks, months, sometimes even years for a single song. Well, thanks to the power of the internet, we can get a glimpse at the songwriting processes of Athens musicians. Below, you'll find a collection of some of my favorite interviews from Youtube.

Athens Music News Roundup

(The Truckers make good cartoon characters, don't they?)

First off, happy birthday to the man among men, the beer-tasting, music-talking, tall tale telling ORT! Go out and have a drink in his honor. Or buy an obscure record. Whichever floats your boat.

Nuci's Space has a slick new website. Check it out when you get a sec.

Girls Rock Athens starts this week. It's a fantastic program aimed at getting guitars in the hands of girls for a week or so and letting them rock the frak out. Last I heard, they're still looking for a few extra hands and a bit of equipment, so get on that if you've got either.

You know, I've often wanted to hold a concert on my birthday but I guess now I won't have to. Azure Ray will be playing the 40 Watt on my special day! Pretty awesome birthday gift if you ask me.

Everybody Everybody is reuniting and playing a show on Thursday. Happiness! Details and more via Threats and Promises.

Our buddies at Team Clermont are celebrating 13 years of indie radio awesome. Woot!

Just a reminder. *ahem* POPFESTPOPFESTPOPFESTPOPFESTPOPFEST! Coming soon.

So, we've connected to this blog in our sidebar linky thing but I figured we should mention it on site as well. I present to you MikeMillsFan.com. I kid you not. It's actually an incredibly well done site, complete with pictures, videos, and interviews from said bassist and the other members of R.E.M.  There's a ton of in-depth info here and a few rare bits and pieces that'll have even the most dedicated R.E.M. junkie fascinated. We're quite flattered to be included on the site.

And please, guys, be careful out there. It's in the low 100's temperature wise.

New Addiction: Yo Soybean!

Who can take a rainbow and make it a double rainbow of awesome? Why, Yo Soybean! They call themselves a party-folk band and I have to agree. I was first introduced to this happy group at a very mixed show at the 40 Watt. They had a cutout of a sun onstage. Unusual for the Watt but very fitting for this band.

Soybean impressed me with their pop/folk leanings and upbeat songs. It's hard to be upbeat in this down without straying into twee/bubblegum territory but Yo Soybean dances merrily around stereotypes. Heck, they're likely to invite you to join as well.

That's not to say that the 'Bean doesn't cover some more serious topics. They just do so in a way that is very refreshing and without self-involved ego. Expect a lot of traditional folk instruments like banjos and harmonicas but with the occasional bongo. So if you're in the mood for some hummable tunes and general happiness, catch Yo Soybean TONIGHT at the Caledonia.

It Might Get Loud...

Having spent the last seven years of my life working in libraries, it should come as no surprise that I'm rather fond of them. Especially when they have cool stuff like this.

Today's awesome of the day comes to us courtesy of the Athens-Clarke County Library System. It's part of the summer reading program.

TONIGHT 6:30 p.m.
Screening of ATHENS GA: INSIDE OUT

Head on down and watch Stipe do his Popeye exercises, sing along with the Bar-B-Que Killers, and try to decipher Dex and Crow's behavior. Or, hone those trivia skills. What kind of drink is Ort holding during his narration? Which album did R.E.M. later record in the restored church where they played "Swan Swan H?" And which band in the movie doesn't have a speaking role? Hmmmmm.

Reconstructing Fables

Reconstruction of the Fables of the Reconstruction of the Fables of the Reconstruction...

I can't tear my eyes away from the spinning, spastic, nearly painful to watch blonde whirly-gig that is Michael Stipe. Part-Elvis, part epileptic, the singer is facing away from the German audience more than he looks directly at them. Buck is on his knees, knocking on his guitar while Mills and Berry look on. This is R.E.M. at Rockpalast. And I'm watching it about 25 years too late.

With the re-release of Fables of the Reconstruction, I've found myself digging into R.E.M.'s back catalogue (always a welcome chore) to find the songs that I can dub "Southern." From time to time, I run into friends who totally forgot where R.E.M. came from, and I can't really blame them. The band's most recent material, coupled with their smash hit songs don't exactly harken back to the land of sweet tea and sticky summers. But Fables is Southern from head to toe. And yet, it took recording in London before R.E.M.'s roots really started showing.

It's difficult to explain to a Northerner what it's like to grow up in the South. And to try and explain the rural/urban duality of Athens is to talk onself into a circle. All the modern amenities you could want, but check the Huddle House sign and it proudly proclaims they have "ice cold air conditioning." It's not easily understood. Fables captures some of that nature: trains, heat, darkness, nature, progress, storytelling.

Take the trains that dot the album, for example. Though they have fallen further out of use since 1985, trains still can be found all throughout Athens, blowing their whistles in the distance late at night. Some find it annoying, but for many, it's a comfort. The trains are still running, time is still moving, and we are all still here.

The tales of "Wendell Gee" and our protagonist in "Life and How to Live It" are the types of stories you hear that could be true, but you're never quite sure. More than likely, you know of someone that could fit those characters, but there's just a touch of oddness that takes the story into the gray area between truth and fable. As long as it teaches and entertains, does it really matter?

"Can't Get There From Here" is a personal favorite, due to the fact that it is very difficult to get to Athens from my hometown, both physically and psychologically. And some 25 years ago, it was difficult to imagine a band from Athens could get anywhere in the world. Now the chorus "I've been there, I know the way" can be sung without a hint of irony. R.E.M. has been there, they know the way. It took a lot of trial and error. And I guess you really can get there (wherever that is) from here.

R.E.M. may not be a Southern band the way that Skynyrd was, but the band's connection to Athens, and by extension, the South, cannot be overlooked. Everybody here comes from somewhere, right?

Athens Music News Roundup

First up, former Athenian Phosphorescent's rental van and gear were stolen on Thursday in Brooklyn. Our buddies over at The Day Jobs have a full list of the missing equipment. Let's help get this gear back if we can.

Next, the Modern Skirts have released their Happy 81 Ep. Take a listen to DUI and tell us what you think...

R.E.M.'s deluxe reissue of Fables of the Reconstruction comes out tomorrow here state-side. Tune in on Wednesday for a look into why this oft-overlooked part of their catalog is also one of the most important when it comes to their Southern heritage. Also, don't forget about the showing at Cine of the boys' performance at Rockpalast circa 1985.

We bid a sad farewell to one of our favorite bands. Leading Edge is hanging up the hat, with band member Eric's departure to teach music in South Georgia. We wish them all well.

Athens Popfest! Tickets on sale now for the amazing festival featuring the likes of Mission of Burma, Oh-Ok, Apples in Stereo....really an insane lineup.

The UGA Music Business Program will continue, says Bruce Burch. He just won't be the one behind it anymore. So no worries, fellow MBusers.

UGA MBUS DIRECTORS MOVING ON...

FROM FLAGPOLE.COM
Business Is Business: Numerous and reliable sources report (and by the time this hits the streets after the holiday weekend, it may have been officially announced) that Bruce Burch, Keith Perissi and Heather Malcom—the director and top staff of UGA's Music Business Certificate Program—are leaving the university to begin a similar program at Kennesaw State University. A Kennesaw State press release last Monday announced the launching of that university's "Entertainment and Music Management Certificate Program" through a "significant and undisclosed contribution" from Atlanta entertainment lawyer Joel A. Katz, whose gigantic firm lists among its clients "Michael Jackson/the estate of Michael Jackson." Damn! Word is, the Terry College will continue the program; let's hope they see fit to do it in such a way as to avoid losing Burch and Co.'s replacements to a neighboring school half our size.

I've asked Bruce and Keith for an official comment but they've declined "until Terry College names a successor if we make any at all."

Considering the headway that the UGA MBUS program made during Bruce's stint at the wheel, it's safe to say that Kennesaw State will be getting one hell of a team. I've never known anyone with as much sheer energy as Bruce, so there ya go. Not to mention the resources the team brought to the table and the fact that they all actually gave a damn.

My personal feelings are pretty conflicted, considering my heavy involvement in the program during my time at UGA. I got to do some incredible things, like introducing Widespread Panic's JB on the first day of classes, learn ProTools from John Keane, work on behalf of Randall Bramblett, and even interview the family of Otis Redding onstage.

On one hand, I wish them all the best and I'm glad they're off on new adventures. On the other, I wish they were sticking around. The exact reasons for their departure are not currently available but when they are, you'll find them here. Anytime a new program gets started, there's sure to be some growing pains...

I'm pretty sure that the UGA MBUS Program will continue on, at least for this semester. What happens after that is anyone's guess. I think my good buddy Zak has put it best:

"I'm going to miss them. They helped propel me into an arena that I adore; I may never have known how to break into the business if not for their guidance, and UGA is going to be lacking with them gone."

Best of luck to the team. We'll keep you updated as things progress.

READ A BOOK! Summer Reading List

(A familiar graphic for all us Georgia librarians...)

Every summer, I make up a list of books that I've been meaning to get around to but just haven't during the year. They usually make good poolside reading (or in my case, couch-side reading) but these aren't your typical reading club choices. I tend to lean towards books I want to take notes about, scribble in, draw dumb pictures and highlight passages. These are just a few I'm reading now. Suggestions are appreciated.

33 1/3: Neutral Milk Hotel: In an Aeroplane Over the Sea
Yes, Neutral Milk Hotel confuses the heck outta me from time to time. That whole collective does, but the music is too good to pass up. So when I found this little gem of a book, I got some insight into that wonderful world of weirdness and heart that is NMH. Probably the best way to explain the unexplainable is to let it speak for itself.

Our Band Could Be Your Life
I was crushed when I realized that this book was in the back of Cooper's car. Thankfully, it has since been returned and is now being re-read as we speak.  As someone who is near clueless about the other underground bands that were so important to indie rock, it helps to have a quick history lesson. The book covers some 13 bands from Mission of Burma to the "has to be included" bands like Black Flag. A really solid read, provided you haven't left it in someone's car.

R.E.M. Talk About the Passion (An Oral History)
I first came across this book at the UGA library, tucked away in a dusty corner. It's not the most well known R.E.M. bio but it's one of the better alternate opinion biographies out there. Probably the most interesting thing about this book is that it tells the story of R.E.M. through the voices of many people surrounding the band. Not everyone has positive things to say... Makes for a good companion to something like It Crawled From the South.

All You Need To Know About The Music Business
Yeah, I finally grabbed the 7th edition, probably just in time for the 8th to come out but regardless, this is a very awesome book for anyone who has ever wondered what (insert random music figure here) does. Should be used more as a reference book and guideline than a Bible but I know of those who swear by it. I'd recommend getting your own copy just so you can underline and highlight to your heart's content.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes...

Well guys, it's summertime and while the living is easy, the news game tends to get a bit more rough. Not to mention I've landed a sweet gig that keeps me working during the day. So in true AMJ tradition, we're moving to Monday-Wednesday-Friday updates starting tomorrow.

We'll soon be changing up the layout of AMJ as well: new banner, new buttons, easier search functions, jump links in posts, profile pages for artists and venues.... It's a lot of stuff and a lot of work but hopefully, it'll make everything a little bit better for all of us.

Also, we're looking to take on a few freelance writers while our lovely staff take their vacations. We like to hear from ya on various things so if you've got an idea, email us at athensmusicjunkie@gmail.com.

And, in really good news, WE GOT OUR YOUTUBE ACCOUNT BACK! So pop on over there and check out what goes on at Athens shows. We'll be uploading more throughout the summer so keep checking back.

Remember our giveaways? There will be one coming up extraordinarily soon, so keep an eye on our Facebook fanpage and twitter accounts (links in the sidebar!) for hints as to what to do...

Anyways, see ya soon and keep on listening!
