CD REVIEW: The Humms

The Humms are back again with an incredibly long tracklist of psychobilly/punk/surf/garage rock. Most bands would decide to break all of this up into two albums or one and a couple of b-sides but not the Humms. The band is delivering Lemonland in all of its glory uncut. If you're more the live type, the Humms are playing tonight at Flicker with Timmy Tumble. Now on to the review.

First, as always, a blurb about the artwork. I usually tend to shy away from the pure black and white covers but in this case it doesn't bother me as much. I might've put something a bit more representative of the album on the cover (bright & swirly) but this'll do.

Blood Sucking Vampire is a great way to kick off an album like Lemonland. It's far more rockabilly than most of the other tracks but it works. I'll take a blood sucking vampire over a glittery one any day. Think kooky spooky. Like Scooby-Doo.

Jesus Lied Not really a whole lot to say about this one. Fun, upbeat.

Uncle Sam Took My Baby Away comes off as more of an upbeat work chant with more than a hint of rockabilly. I'm particularly fond of the harmonies here, something that many bands ignore. A great harmony can make or break a song. USTMB is an example. Consider it made.

Buttermilk leans more to the psychedelic end of the spectrum with fuzzy vocals, piercing guitar, and the drums thrown into the back of the mix. Sounds like it was recorded in the middle of an electrical storm the way that guitar overwhelms everything else.

Don’t Think About Death goes into beach-rock mode. For some reason, I keep seeing a halloween beach party during this song. Complete with Frankenstein doing the monkey and Wolfman doing the Charlie Brown. Seriously, listen to it and tell me you can't see that.

Close Your Ears  sounds like a counter-intuitive order. Open your ears to this track and get surprised with sparkling harmonies worthy of indie-rock fame. Amazing what you can do with a guitar and a bit of creative vocalizations.
Sleepy, Sleepy perfect name for this sleepy track.

Fat Bat is still working with the almost Halloween-oriented nature of this album. A top track for me, if only for that nice intro with the fat bass and the hard to understand (at first) lyrics. Breakneck singing pace. And the awesome "fat bat!" sounds.

Stranger In Your Car was left off the vinyl version for space/time reasons and it's a shame. Very danceable.

Brown Haired Devil is a bit more musically straightforward than the rest. If you're the surf-rock type, this should be your jam. Hearing a bit of White Stripes being channeled in the vocals here.

Strawberry Glue. Not exactly sure what strawberry glue would do to a person but if it's as powerful as this, I'll take some.

Oh My Lawd also didn't make the vinyl cut. Fuzzed out garage/psych rock at its best. Full of catchy hooks and insanely fun to rock out to. A bit spooky as well.

Talking To a Ghost didn't make it to the vinyl either. Quiet compared to the rest of the album, "Ghost" is more of a connector piece than a full-on Humms song. Reminds me a lot of the proto-typical soft indie songwriters.

Leave That Boy Alone. Again, not really a whole lot to say about this one. Pleasant enough but I kinda wish they'd have left this one off.

Gun was the last casualty of the vinyl format.I think the Humms should've left this one on. Really vampy and enjoyable. I found myself reciting the "peasant" line a ton. Sticks in your brain like glue. Strawberry? Perhaps.

Little Freaky Girl Like You is an upbeat track with a more mono-tone vocal delivery. The apathy in the vocals works against the lyrics (I like the way you talk girl). Makes for an interesting track but it comes off better live.

Escape From Lemonland was kinda pointless to leave on here when other songs were waiting in the wings.

When I Wake sung to the tune of "This Land is Your Land." Normally, I'd be against this but it's a pretty nice relief after the onslaught of the rest of the album.

Lemonland makes me want to force the Humms to swap names with the Awesomelies. At least then they'd be descriptive! Perfect for a ghoulish beach party (as mentioned above) or a good Halloween party. Dead serious, it's honestly one of the best albums I've heard all year. I give it a 9 out of 10.

New Addiction: Harp Unstrung

Now, normally I wait until a band has a show upcoming before I put them up in my Addictions list but Harp Unstrung has lodged itself firmly in my brain and will not let go.

A little bit bluesy, a little bit alt, and a few Southern/Country leanings blend with delightful harmonies and, as previously stated, memorable melodies. So many bands that claim to be alt-rock and namecheck U2 or Phish forget what makes those bands great. It's more than noodling around in a groove or making a song really bombastic. There are melodies underneath those layers and that's something that Harp Unstrung gets.

The current tune taking residence in my brain is "Astrid." A beautiful and soft rendition appears on the band's myspace page. I encourage you to take a listen to the beautiful guitar work. It's neither too much or too little but instead balances just right.

UPDATE: Just saw that Harp Unstrung is playing THIS SATURDAY  at the GEORGIA BAR! WHOO!!!

Epic Fail Playlist for the Dawgs

Dawgs, c'mon. You're killin' me here! I couldn't even stand to watch all of the game on Saturday, deciding instead to peer around the corner at the t.v. while hammering out emails. I heard a lot of groaning. Then I made the mistake of logging onto facebook and saw an avalanche of sad status updates.

I think we could all use a little therapy right now. So come with me now as I go through the Five Stages of Grief with our EPICFAIL playlist for the GA Bulldawgs.

ACCEPTANCE
Well, no video for this one cause it's just unacceptable. Let's go back to the depression part. At least it has booze.

Athens Music News Roundup

Okay dudes and dudettes! Time for some local music news type stuff! Let's get to it!

The Burning Angels
will soon have a new album out, if Mark's facebook status is correct. YAY!

The New Young, Foxy & Free
is out. Go get one.

More R.E.M. news:
According to HQ, they're finally done with the new album. Release date has yet to be determined but Spring '11 looks good. Now for the naming process to begin. I vote either "Love and Squalor" or "Secret Decoder Ring."

Also, "Losing My Religion" will be sung on Glee by the Finn character during the third episode. Apparently Finn sees Jesus in a piece of cheese toast. Yeah. This is gonna be a wait and see thing, for sure.

And check out this post by our friends at REMRing on the Top 10 R.E.M. Songs of the 21st Century. I agree with numbers 2 and 3. The others are negotiable...

More from Widespread Panic:
"Live in the Classic City II" comes out on Tuesday! It features folks like John Keane, Mike Mills, Bloodkin and more.

The Hannah's Buddies Golf Tourney is going to be held in Orlando, FL January 21st.  An auction will be held the next day, complete with tunes from the DBTs and Mr. Bell himself. More info here.

Edwin McCain:
Is playing tomorrow night. Between him and Sister Hazel, I'm having a minor "1997-98 wimpy alt-rock" flashback. Somebody grab Hootie and the Blowfish!

Speaking of blowing, UGA's Homecoming Concert may actually not suck so bad this year. But I may be wrong. It'd be ludicrous to not mention it though.

Upcoming On AMJ :
We've got a ton of records reviewed in our backlog so they're getting put up. I'm talking the new ones from the Skirts, Dead Confederate, Kite to the Moon (RELEASE SHOW TOMORROW!), and the Humms. And a few more, come to think of it. Yeah, lots of people releasing good stuff

Also, still uploading new footage from various shows to the AMJYoutube account.

Another giveaway? Yup.

New playlist type suggestion thingies? Yes indeed.

Feeling a Bit Under the Weather...

Yeah, yeah, I know. Yes, I'm still at work. And yes, I already have tomorrow's blog post up and ready to go. I also have the sinus headache from hell so I'm gonna post a few videos and go sit in a small, dark corner for a bit.

I really miss REMDave's youtube channel. But since he's not uploading anymore, I find myself turning to REMchout for goodies such as this:

Remember that secret show Pylon did? AthensUGADawg sure does!

What I really like about WidespreadPanic's channel is that they upload actual concert footage!

So, yeah. Have some fun with these, subscribe if you can to their channels, and remember that AMJ happens to have its own channel too. Awesome. I'm gonna go get some tylenol now. Thanks.

Contest: Win Tickets to The Orkids/Misfortune500/Heypenny

Hey, it's Monday and we're all a bit bummed about having to return to work, right? So why not let AMJ make your day a little brighter by giving you free stuff. Before we begin, I'll go ahead and mention that I help out Misfortune500 from time to time. So there ya go. ANYWHO...

I've got TWO TICKETS to the Orkids, Misfortune500, and Heypenny show on Thursday that I want to give away. Preferably to you, of course! Naturally, I can't just give them away. There's a question you have to answer first!

The Caledonia Lounge wasn't always the Caledonia. It was known by another well-known venue name long ago. So what was it?

Submit your answers to athensmusicjunkie@gmail.com with the subject heading "Octopus." It's first come, first serve so get to work!

And if you make it out to the show, make sure to stop by and say hi. I'll most likely be working merch. Again.

How about a taste of the Orkids live? At the 40 Watt perhaps? Or click here for their awesome music video.

And I just uploaded this video from the Hipster Party back in April of Misfortune500.

*Official rule type things*
Contest ends at 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning, winner will be announced on Wednesday's post and notified via email that same day. Winner will have his/her name placed on the guest list for a Plus One ticket to the Orkids/Misfortune500/Heypenny show on Sept. 23rd.

Gimme Shelter

I've mentioned my love of all things Southern Shelter before but my new job has me deeply in Sloan Simpson's debt. I should explain that now I'm 8 to 5, I've got more time than ever to listen to boatloads of music. Sure, I've got stuff to review and that's always great but sometimes you just want something you can sit back and enjoy, right?

That's where Southern Shelter comes in. That Casper and the Cookies show I saw 3 years ago? Bam, right there. Legendary Pylon show? Got ya covered.

I even made a little flag to express my appreciation.

Fear my awesome MS Paint skills.
And I found the ultra-secret pledge of allegiance to the Sloan flag!

I pledge allegiance
to the flag
of the awesome Southern Shelter
and to Sloan Simpson
and microphone stands
One nation, under....HOLY CRAP IS THAT A WILCO RECORDING?!

Yes, I'm in a rather silly mood this morning. But I really don't care. I've got some awesome tunes today thanks to Sloan. So check out his site when you get a chance. His most recent stuff includes that secret Glands show, Harvey Milk, and Dead Confederate. ROCK!

New Addiction: Quiet Hooves

Quiet Hooves is one of those bands I have to dub more of a "collective" due to their ever-changing lineups and the involvement of members in multiple other projects. For example, the Hooves have both Jeff Tobias and Mercer West at their disposal, making the Quiet Hooves family tree quite the interconnected plant type thingy.

They have this ability to pull more and more musicians into their fold, Tobias, yet again, proving an example. He wrote this piece on Quiet Hooves in March of this year. Now, he's in the band. Just another day in Athens, GA..

But back to the actual band. Quiet Hooves are anything but quiet. The hooves part of the band's moniker could be right on, however. Disjointed would be a good way to label it, if you had to. There's many hints of melody but having at least eight different members, some of whom are playing the same instruments, can create a magnificent noise that's a bit odd at the worst and interesting at the best.

Make sure to check Q.H. out tonight at New Earth Music Hall.

Athens Music News Roundup

Many, many, many thanks to our friend Patrick McGinn for the of Montreal photo.

And now for the bits and pieces of Athens music news!

Drivn' N' Cryin' had their trailer, along with all their equipment, stolen from the La Quinta motel in Macon, GA on Friday night. The trailer is a black Quicksilver 5x10 model with DNC stickers on it. The tag is TL9H396. Currently, an arrest warrant has been put out for a person believed to be pawning stolen materials from D'n'C. More details and contact info are here.

Nuci's Space kicks off its Pro Bono Music Law clinic tomorrow. If you've got questions about copyright, fees, and other fun legal type stuff, stop by. Everything starts up at 2 p.m. Check out Nuci's Space's site for more details.

Speaking of Nuci's, you'll want to read up on a new series of albums coming out that are tied to the organization over on our friend Echoreyn of Athens' blog.

R.E.M. has posted an interesting video clip featuring some new music that's coming out of their time in Nashville. Let the wild speculation begin! And for my fellow McCaughey fans, a fun little link.

It looks like officers may start ticketing street musicians for noise violations, says the Red and Black...

I think my Lastfm account is a bit outta whack. Or maybe not. Maybe I just listen to that kind of stuff all the time... *shrug*

As always, if you've got any news, pictures, videos, or anything else you'd like shared, email us at athensmusicjunkie@gmail.com.

DEBATE: Indie Hipster Headress Party?

Today's topic of conversation comes courtesy of Gordon Lamb's Threats and Promises column this week in Flagpole.

So Gordon's working on an article about the growing popularity of Native American costume at indie rock shows. Fans and bands alike will come out dressed in war-paint, headdresses, and other bits and pieces that could be considered "Indian." I've noticed it a bit around town with some of the wackier bands and the occasional touring act. Now, Gordon's collecting opinions on this whole thing so if you want to let him know your say, drop him a line at threatsandpromises@flagpole.com.

Personally, I'm kinda neutral on the whole thing. Sure, I've got some Cherokee blood, who in the area doesn't? It doesn't offend me but I can see where it might be a bit uncomfortable for others.

So what's your take on this? Harmless hipster fad? Annoying misunderstanding of history? Or something more sinister? Post comments below...

Well That Was Random: The Glands at Flicker

About three months ago, I saw a comment on a "Where Did the Glands Go?" video on Youtube that indicated that the band had gotten back together and might start playing out again. "Wait, what?" I thought. I quickly forgot about the comment and continued on my way.

Flash forward to Monday. I'm just arriving into town from holiday and my phone begins to light up with texts. First some cryptic stuff then finally "The Glands are playing a secret show at Flicker." My heart leaps up into my throat. No friggen way. Soon after was another text: "It's sold out." Cue up the really sad music of heartache and pain. Figures.

Yes, I'm the type that knows about secret shows before they happen. But unfortunately, it's usually only minutes before. Everyone else has filled the building or it's way outta my way to get there... Yup, that's the usual way it goes. And so it went for a long time tonight.

When I got to Flicker, the bar was at capacity and most of my friends were already milling about, wristbands on and beer in hand. I stood around and chatted for a bit, trying to get a good glimpse of the Glands' setup. Way too many people to even see. As the night wore on, people began filing inside Flicker and I was basically stuck outside to listen from the benches out front.

So there I sat, listening to the delightful melodies coming from inside where dozens of people had gathered because they had heard the news in time. I must've looked fairly sad because after a few songs, the doorguy took pity upon my soul and let me in! YAY! I managed to twist and turn my way towards the back of the room, landing on top of the benches.

Not the greatest of angles, I thought to myself, but it'll do. At least I got in here. Someone near the front decided it'd be a great idea to light up in the middle of a crowded room. It wasn't long before the scent of weed reached our nostrils in the back. Sigh. Just lovely. I made a mental note to throw my clothes in the washer when I got back.

It was quite the show. The Glands have obviously been working hard during their downtime. The set only faltered when they switched guitars out or had to call powwows to pick their next tune from a notebook covered in scribbles.

I thought I had fallen into Athens circa 1998. And I know I wasn't the only one that felt that way. Taking stock of the crowd, I saw a great gathering of the generation of Athens musicians that had witnessed the rise of The Glands. And maybe, just maybe, we got to see them before they rose again.

They Say You Can't Wear White After Labor Day...

Not quite sure who made up the rule about wearing white after Labor Day but as my close friends will attest, I am no slave to fashion. Never have been. I'm more of a jeans, t-shirt, and random hat type person. But in Athens, bands seem to be born with some weird fashion gene. Check out the following videos for some of the more interesting fashion statements our bands have made over the years!

We'll start off with a vid from R.E.M. Stipe's become quite the fashion icon over the years, sporting everything from blue face paint and white tailored suits to oversized shirts. "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" finds him in t-shirt and jeans mode with Mills sporting a then new look. Buck and Berry stick with their usual. If you want something really trippy, watch this clip with the sound off.

Thankfully, Mills' nudie suit is now hanging outside of his personal closet. The green color was nice. The cut was even ok. But when you're inspired to grab the Bedazzler and go to town on your old disco suit? Not a good idea.

I know I'm completely biased when it comes to Misfortune500 but when every write-up they get mentions the "anime hair," you kinda have to include them in a fashion post. Me? I just sell the t-shirts.

It makes sense that Misfortune would do a Hipster Party with the Gold Party. These guys have fashion down. Take a bit of black, pair it with good music, and boom. Luxury and Light.

If the darker colors of the spectrum aren't really your thing, turn to Casper and the Cookies. Glitter, glam, funk... it's all here. And all on the eyelashes of the Cookies.

And where would we be without Of Montreal. Those guys even have a song about the hardships of the fashion elite.

Oh if only Kevin Barnes could help my wardrobe... Alas.

Anywho, Happy Labor Day guys!

Ready for Some Football?

Yes, it's time for football! Thousands of drunken fans, crowding into scorching hot bleachers and yelling themselves hoarse as they take sips of their $4 Cokes spiked with whatever they could sneak in the stadium. Oh, and there's a game too.

But I always loved hearing the Redcoat Band. They always do a good job of warming up the crowd and creating a fun spirit in the midst of a difficult atmosphere. I've had a few friends in the marching band over the years and it never ceases to amaze me the amount of work they put into putting on a great show.

When you think about it, the Redcoat Band plays in front of more people than any other band in Athens. How often do you get to play a stadium gig? That is broadcasted live on t.v.? Yeah, they're pretty badass.

So whether you're pre-gaming from 5 p.m. today until the game or you're getting the hell outta Dodge, just remember to drive safely and have some fun.

Go Dawgs!

Farewell PASTE

Our dear friends at Paste Magazine lit up Twitter the other night with distressing messages ranging from "Oh crap. Need a job now" to slightly more panicked reactions. The news then broke that Paste has suspended print publications and may now only exist in digital form. The magazine was instrumental in forming my ideas about how music journalism should be conducted and though I may not have always agreed with some record reviews, I at least knew the minds behind them were sound.

But this seems to be a growing trend in the indie world, once thought a bit protected from the mainstream media woes. Like the movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Paste was a very niche magazine (despite it's national renown) and unfortunately, couldn't be supported by its audience alone.

It's heartbreaking for me to see it go and for my fellow Grady grads to be up the creek without a paddle. More worrying is the lack of a solid print music magazine to promote our Athens artists. Paste, being located just a short drive from Athens, paid close attention to our town and latched onto artists like Venice is Sinking and Bill Mallonee, giving them much needed national exposure. With Paste now digital only, I worry that good bands will fall through the cracks.

I suppose what's really bothering me (besides one less magazine I can freelance for, damn!), is the fact that we all felt it coming. I hoped it wouldn't but honestly, it makes more sense to keep stuff digital than spend money for print supplies. I like physical mags as much as the next person but the reason AMJ isn't print is cause I have no money to do so. Even if I did, digital is more timely.

That being said, print tends to be more geared towards long pieces. It's easy to read a 500 word spiel on a record online but when you want an in depth piece to read, the glare of the computer monitor isn't exactly your friend.

Alas, the world runs on money and not sheer amounts of awesome. Here's hoping Paste finds some way to continue online in the future.
