Athens Music News Roundup

Steve Bell
We start things off with a slight departure this time on AthensMusic News Roundup. First up, a word from WUGA...

"The Staff would like to say thank you to Steve Bell for his leadership and friendship. Today is Steve's last day as captain of this ship. Steve will continue as Dir of Broadcast, Video& Photography at UGA. Under Steve's leadership WUGA enjoyed more success than at any other time in its history. Effective March 1st, Jimmy Sanders will be the new Dir of TV/Radio. The staff welcomes Jimmy and is looking forward to the station's continued success."

Tiny Mix Tapes has an interview with Laura Carter about the Elephant Six Collective.

In the first trickle of our eventual R.E.M. related waterfall of coverage (you knew it was coming), the band's having virtual "listening parties" across the globe. We get NPR while the rest of the world will get Spotify. Dangit, Spotify! *shakes fists*

What is the Plush Palace? Apparently another house venue. Bands interested in playing the Chase St. hangout should contact contact Patrick at theplushpalace@gmail.com.

Congrats to Flagpole's The McCommunists for winning the Nuci's Space Athens Business Rocks Battle of the Bands.  Of course, those Commies don't know what AthensMusicJunkie is cooking up for next year. Stay tuned...

Really Not Much Left to Say...

Hard to believe it's been two years. The best thing about Randy Bewley's music is that it lives on. And damn, what great music it was. Is. Will be. Long live Pylon. Long live Randy.

Contest! Win Randall Bramblett DVD & Tickets!

It's been a while since we checked in on our good pal Randall Bramblett. Last we saw him, he was touring behind his piano heavy love song record. It's absolutely stunning if you haven't heard it yet. Apparently, Bramblett and co recorded a show and  are making it available on dvd. To mark the occasion, he's playing the Melting Point this Friday. And guess who's got tickets for ya?

Question: Which Widespread Panic official releases did Randall Bramblett appear on?

So, answer this question and put " Sax and Violins" in your subject when you email your answer to athensmusicjunkie@gmail.com. Winner gets a ticket (plus 1) to Randall's show on Friday and a dvd given to you at the door. First person to correctly answer and email gets it.
The DVD, recorded at the Rialto Room last year, features some of Bramblett's most brilliant and heartbreaking work from his latest album The Meantime. Plus, the man's a badass.

Garrie Vereen

According to the Athens Banner-Herald, Widespread Panic Equipment Manager Garrie Vereen was found dead in his home yesterday.Vereen was an irreplaceable member of the Panic touring crew and was beloved by the band and friends alike.

I can't claim to have known Garrie personally but any of Panic's fans could tell you about his influence on them. Check out the comments left here.

The Vereen Family Trust has been set up at First American Bank and Trust 300 College Avenue, Athens, GA 30601 (706) 354-5000.

New Addiction: BombsBombsBombs

I've been seeing this band name more and more about town lately. I finally got the chance to check out the music of BombsBombsBombs and was pretty impressed by what I found. It's my understanding that the members of the band are pretty young which is surprising considering the polish you'll find in their music.

In a land full of short lived experimental groups, it's refreshing to find someone who strays a bit more towards mainstream.Word is that the band is just now finishing up work on their album. Yay! So if you get a chance to check out BombsBombsBombs, be prepared for some solid indie pop in the vein of Death Cab.

Athens Music News Roundup

B-52s this week. WOOOOOOOOO!

Jordan got interviewed by Kyle Bylin of Hypebot.com about local blogs and why they matter. Check out part 1 here and part 2 here.

Go-Go Boots by the Drive-By Truckers now available to the world! YAY!

The Modern Skirts will be opening up for of Montreal at the Buckhead Theatre on May 20th. Yeah, that's a bit weird.

From REPTAR:"HEY YOU! Wanna be in our music video? We need extras to meet us at Flicker in Athens TODAY, February 15th at 6 pm!!!! Come hang out with us! Wear crazy clothing / face paint / pleasure disks and name tags! Be ripe. No overripe or unripe fruit allowed."

A couple of reminders for ya, R.E.M. wants you to remix "It Happened Today" and The Baseball Project (hallowed be thy names) is headed to ATL and ATH on tour! Link here.

On the non-AMJ/other business side, I've got a lot of bands asking me about SXSW shows they could play. If you've got one that needs a solid Athens band, send a post to athensmusicjunkie@gmail.com.

Speaking of festivals, Bonnaroo's lineup is out. It features Widespread Panic (and office favorites the Decemberists and Arcade Fire)

Silly Little Love Songs

Friday, February 11, 2011

Welcome to the Conversation: John Keane

When not in the studio, John can be found onstage with Deja Vu, Strawberry Flats, Widespread Panic, Nathan Sheppard, or his talented daughters Paige and Rachel. He's literally written the book on Pro-Tools, taught classes on pro-tools at UGA, and even won a dance competition. Now the man who's worked with everyone from R.E.M. to the Indigo Girls is a full-fledged Grammy Nominee for his work on Panic's latest album Dirty Side Down. AthensMusicJunkie's Jordan Stepp caught up with the Grammy Nominee as he was about to start work with Momma's Love. Now, ladies and gentlemen, Mr. John Keane.

AthensMusicJunkie: Alrighty. First question. So how did you find out about your Grammy nomination?

John Keane: I got an email from Michele Caplinger who is the executive director of NARAS, the Atlanta chapter, congratulating me. Right before that, I found out from my next door neighbor who had read it in the New York Times.

AMJ: Wow.

JK: It was a big surprise for me.

AMJ: What did you do when you found out?

JK: Well, I was getting ready for a session when I found out so I wasn't able to do anything until I got through with that but then I emailed a bunch of people and told them what was going on. My wife, Jo, had already found out about it from our next door neighbor. Good news travels fast, I guess. We started thinking about it, trying to decide if we were going to go and how we were going to get there and where we were going to stay and what we were going to wear and all that kind of stuff.

AMJ: Very cool. So how's it feel to be a Grammy nominee?

JK: It's very exciting. It's a great honor to be nominated for a Grammy because it's voted on by a group of your peers in the music industry. So the people who voted for the record are actually engineers and producers and A&R people. It's really like being nominated by a group of your peers instead of just a popularity contest.

AMJ: Have you heard your competition? The other records in your category?

JK: No, I haven't had the chance to listen to the other records that were nominated. One of them is John Mayer and another is Ray LaMontagne.

AMJ: What do you think caught the attention of the others who elected you for this Grammy nomination?

JK: I guess they just really must have liked the sound of it. The Grammy is for engineering so there must have been something about the way that it sounded that got their attention. I don't really know how these things go but I guess they put on the album and listen to the first song or two because they have 450 albums to go through so they can't listen to them all all the way through, I believe. The first song on the album is "Saint Ex" must have really gotten their attention. It is an unusual sounding song, kind of an older style Panic song that goes through a lot of different movements, almost like a suite. It's more like a suite than your normal pop song.

AMJ: How exactly do you capture the essence of a band like Panic? They do these amazing versions of their songs live, is there anything you do in particular to capture that same live feeling?

JK: Well, I think it's important to have them all in the studio there together, all in the same room playing instead of separating them into different cubicles where it's harder to communicate. One thing that we did on this record is that when we started on a song, we worked on it until it was finished. I think that kind of helped preserve the vibe of the song. It takes a bit longer that way but in the end, it worked in the way the songs came together.

AMJ: You also recorded a song by Vic Chesnutt, "This Cruel Thing." What was it like to visit that song with the band?

JK: The band said that they wanted to do something to acknowledge Vic and I had a few songs over hear by Vic that hadn't made it onto any of his albums. So I pulled that one out and played it for them and asked "How about this one?". As far as I know, it had never made it onto any of Vic's albums but an actor named Guy Pierce had recorded it on his record. They listened to it and liked it a lot. I'm sure it was kind of a wrenching experience because it was still sort of fresh in our minds, Vic's passing but they did a great job on it.

AMJ: What do you think about the band being 25 years old now?

JK: I think it's great that they've been able to stick around so long and remain a viable music entity for this long. It's really rare in this business. Most bands don't make it that far. There's just a few you can point to, R.E.M. is another one, but I think it's great that they can still keep writing and making records and selling out venues even after twenty-five years. Their audience has sort of grown up with them but they're still very popular in the college market for a bunch of guys that are all close to 50 years old.

AMJ: One last question. If you win, how will you celebrate and where will you put the Grammy?

JK: If I win I'm definitely going to have to have some kind of a party to celebrate it. In my studio I have a mantle place in the back of the room that has a lot of pictures and memorabilia and a lava lamp and stuff like that on it. If I win the Grammy, I'd probably put it in the middle of it, in a prominent place. But if I win, definitely going to have to have some sort of soiree. We've got our fingers crossed.

Best of luck, John, from all of us at AthensMusicJunkie!

Armchair Producer

So in a pretty neat twist, R.E.M. and Jacknife Lee have made all the multi-track files from "It Happened Today" available for you to download and do what you will. Ever want to hear a Mills-less mix? You can make it happen. Want to put that sweet techno beat you've been working on behind the moans of Eddie Vedder? You can do that too.

Personally, I'm working on a mix using some old live recordings I've got from around town. An "Athens" mix, if you will. And while this is a great way to bring fans into the mix (pun-intended), part of me thinks this was an effort to have fans understand just how insanely frustrating the mixing process is.

You can upload your finished versions to the collective SoundCloud. There's been some pretty interesting mixes going on. Current faves include The Cactus Remix and David Wu's Piano Mix (complete with visit from the FringeMunks!). Then there's the REMOMG WTF mix. WOW. So get yourself to mixing. Have fun. Make it yours.

CD Review: Monahan

We've talked about Monahan once before but now we're finally reviewing the upcoming album Stop Saying I. It's been on in the office as we've been painting and what not so rest assured, we've had a lot of time to listen to the lovely voice of Mr. Ryan Monahan and his assembled group of accomplished musicians. Catch the cd release party NEXT FRIDAY at Little Kings. Now on with the show...

As usual, a word about the album artwork first. Normally, I'm against artists appearing on the cover of their albums. But this is a special case. Note how Monahan is not the main focus of the photo. It's bright but drained of color a bit. And a lamp. Who doesn't love lamps?

Moving Targets acts as the baseline point for the rest of the album. Monahan introduces a lot of themes, both musically and lyrically, that will come back later on. A driving beat, complex orchestration, and a crooning voice are all you need to fall in love at first listen.

The Pendulum's Heart sounds like a good Maroon 5 cut. Yeah, you may wince a bit at the comparison but the beat is pretty much where that ends. Monahan goes into full croon mode to counterbalance the sexy dance the backing band has created behind him. I always imagine him singing this in some velvet draped lounge as lovers whirl around in slow motion on the dance floor. But that's just me.

Offset starts off sounding like it came from the Lion King but then Monahan's voice cuts through, sounding all the world like Bono. It's got a lot going on in it, from mandolin (?) and electric guitar to constant chanting in the background. At times it may get a little overwhelming but once you hit near the 2:20 mark, you've gotten used to it and they've changed the dynamic once again.

Love Me Sober Why is this not on a soundtrack yet? Maybe some indie flick with the lead male looking out forlornly at the sunset as his girlfriend walks away.... It's sad, atmospheric, and the perfect song for a rainy day.

Criminals is the second mellow offering in a row. Again, I must comment on the arrangements. There's a banjo in here, mixed in the very back, that works perfectly. It's small touches like this that take a solid song and lift it to greatness.

Dirty Talk I love this one. Think Beck meets Radiohead. It's a ton of fun and probably my favorite on the album.

More Familiar Words is a bit under-par considering the rest of the album. That said, it's leagues better than anything you'll hear on the radio, that's for sure.

Mr.& Ms. Understanding is a great end to the album, a mix of quiet reflection and louder venting. Stick around through the whoooooole track for some interesting stuff.

Overall, I'd have to give Stop Saying I a 9 out of 10. If you want pure pop perfection, look no further than Monahan. It's pop music for people who actually like music. Perfect listening for when the clouds are covering the sky and it's about to rain.

The RPM Challenge

It's February everybody! You know what that means, right? It's time for the RPM Challenge!

You know, the challenge when you or your band record an album that's ten songs or 35 minutes long... from scratch. There's no real prizes but you do get the smug satisfaction of knowing that you've accomplished something that it usually takes most people decades to do. Maybe the music will be ok, maybe not. Doesn't really matter as long as you have fun!

Perhaps you're a singer-songwriter who wants to try her hand at rap. Here's your shot. Or maybe your alt-goth band wants to go country. RPM Challenge is prime for that. Whatever your reason, it's nice to have a completed project in a month, right? Right. Get on it!

For more on the RPM Challenge, go here.
