Athens Music News Roundup!

Tonight's Dead Confederate, Five Eight, Bambara show has been moved to MAX from the Georgia Theatre due to concerns from the inspectors that the sprinklers in the building weren't putting out enough water.

The Humms show at New Earth tonight has been cancelled and will be rescheduled for a later date.

POPFEST has announced its headliners and boy is the list a doozy. You've got OLIVIA TREMOR CONTROL, BOB MOULD, THE DEAD MILKMEN, MAN OR ASTROMAN?, THROWING MUSES, KLEENEX GIRL WONDER, and MASTERS of THE HEMISPHERE. Additional supporting acts will be announced closer to October.

The Warm Fuzzies are doing a fan of the month thing over on their Tumblr. Check it out!

The Athens GA Half Marathon will be held OCT 22 - 23 and deadline for early registration is July 31.

This is the last weekend for you to get 75% off at Gigworn which is shutting down soon.

Also shutting down? Friggin' Schoolkids Records. :(

And every single Borders Bookstore.

In AMJ news, we just changed our Twitter name from blueshades to AthMusicJunkie in order to stop some of the confusion. And it probably just causes more. *shrug*

Mike Mills of R.E.M. will be on Just Off the Radar on Sunday at 4 p.m.

*whew* Busy day...

If You Give A Band a Handicam...

You may end up with more than you bargained for. Reptar took on NYC a little earlier this summer and ended up running off with Buzzfeed's Flip cam. If you're wondering what life on tour looks like, it's pretty much this. With the smell of sweat and coffee. And no sleep. Yeah.

But it's good to see that Reptar is adjusting to their new-found signed status as well as they are. If you haven't been able to see the band lately, they'll be playing the Georgia Theatre on August 9th with J Roddy Walston and the Business. Tickets are available here.

Welcome Back Old Friend

Won't you look at that? Two years in the making. Every time I pass by the building downtown I feel this sense of awe and pride. Amazing how much a little tender loving care can transform a building after a devastating fire.We remember the flames. We shot the video, took the photos, blogged and called and nearly cried as a community. Remember how helpless we felt? How awful that entire year was? Well, it got better. A lot better.

Opening night is coming up fast. The acts have been booked, the media wooed, the word put out... How awesome is this going to be?! And none of it would have been done if not for everyone who donated. Thanks to the bands that donated show funds, the fans who attended the shows, the people who bought shirts and bracelets and tickets... This isn't just about the Georgia Theatre and its owners. It's about a landmark and the town that loved it. And many years from now, we'll have that awesome story to tell about how a community banded together and saved the Theatre for everyone to enjoy once more. That'll be a story worth hearing again and again.

RIP SchoolKids Records

I'm afraid it's true. The Athens, GA branch of Schoolkids Records is closing its doors, according to the Schoolkids Records Closing Sale Facebook page. They've already gone into liquidation mode with a sale that will last until the store's final day, August 20th.

We'll hopefully have some more info about the closing for you later on. We're not sure if anything is happening to the other branch or not. Until then, let us remind ourselves and others of the importance of supporting your local independent record stores. Thank you.

Norway

As of right now, we don't know what exactly is going on in Norway. Oslo has been bombed and a shooting took place in Utoya. Personally, I have never been to Norway but I've always held the idea that I might go there one day. I have friends there. Good friends. We met through Murmurs.com, the R.E.M. fansite. We've talked for hours about Stipe's dance moves, Peter's guitar, Bill Berry's farm... I can only hope and pray that they are all ok.

Right now I'm watching Twitter, which seems to be the best source for news at the moment. Watching the #tags roll in is a sobering reminder that America is not alone in this world. And that Athens has its ties to Norway, though faint some may be. I won't claim to know anything about Norway or its culture. But I can't help but feel a wave of sadness knowing that sudden violence has taken the lives of innocent people. All I can do is hope and pray for peace.

SLOPFEST!

Heard he's also missing a Congressman or two.
Here in the heat of the white hot Georgia summer, we tend to throw a festival called Athfest. After we've recovered somewhat, we venture back out once again like fools for a little thing called Slopfest. If you haven't heard of Slopfest yet, that's really no surprise. Instead of being an incredibly large outdoor event, it brands itself as more indie, more good times, more...well, sloppy.

Head over to Little Kings starting tonight and you'll find an incredible range of bands from DJs to punk to rock to hard rock to experimental... It's all just thrown together in a stew for you to taste. Personally, I love little mini-fests like these because you get to skip the crowds and most of the heat and just hang out. Bonus points: not all of the bands are from Athens. Bands from as far away as Minneapolis and Macon are playing for your enjoyment. And for theirs.

So come on out and hear the do it yourselfiness attitude.

Athens Music News Roundup

Play Portal 2, get reference.
Astronauts in the very last NASA space shuttle mission woke up to an a capella version of  "Man on the Moon" recorded by Michael Stipe somewhere in Italy. The broadcast included the studio version and a message recorded by Mr. Stipe for the occasion.Hear the message here!

BombsBombsBombs has made their entire album free to download. Do it. Review coming soon (hint, it rocks!)

Jumping on the discount train is Misfortune500 who have dropped their debut album to a mere $2.

Monahan's other other band, Beatles for Sale, hinted they might do a Beets Cover Band if there was enough interest. For the love of everything that was our childhood, tell them you NEED MORE ALLOWANCE!

Flagpole Music Editor Michelle Gilzenrat posted an open letter to the Flagpole comment trolls and the actual decent human beings that comment from time to time.

We're apparently getting a Steak and Shake. Please stand by while the AMJ staff weeps with joy....

The Georgia Theatre keeps adding more and more shows. Check out the list here!

See ya later!

Get Personal

I get a lot of email. A lot. It's not uncommon for me to get off work, head home, pull up my inbox and see dozens of messages, all from indie bands, begging for coverage. Most of the time, however, it's not the bands themselves constantly attacking with an overwhelming surge of information. No, it's usually a PR company or publicist somewhere that has no clue who I am, what I write about, or even where this blog is based. The amount of email from Brooklyn I get is ridiculous.

I will admit that a lot of these emails get skimmed over. There are things you look for in an email that indicate whether or not the company sending you this announcement is friendly or if they just plucked your email off a list somewhere.

Do they use your name? Could be a human. Could be a machine. Ok, what about blog title? Again, either/or. But if it alludes to something you've written before, that one gets your attention.

Don't get me wrong. I love good PR companies. I worked for one for a while. I know what effort goes into them and I'd be a bit more clueless without them. But if you are a band seeking web-coverage, writing your own emails might be worth looking into. You'll see why in a second.

I suppose I started thinking about all this at lunch today, while reading Fred Mills' column in the latest Stomp and Stammer. In it, Mr. Mills discusses going through his record collection and finding all sorts of personal notes from artists asking that he only consider them for review.

He compares this with the lifeless one sheets that anyone that has been in the music review game for more than a week has seen.

"But at the risk of coming across as quaint, I can't help but feel that when a band took the time to write down something personal, it humanized them to a far greater degree than anything a publicity agent could possibly cobble together. Somehow I had a greater stake in checking 'em out and giving their music a fair listen."

Exactly. I always get this little warm and fuzzy feeling when an email is personal. You can attach whatever your publicist wrote, list your tour dates, cd releases, etc. at the bottom. That's useful information. But in a highly impersonal age, using faceless communication, you want to catch someone's attention and make it important to them.

There is too much noise online for any one band to shout over. Bands get followings because the people that listen to them and write about them CARE. Maybe the reviewer hates their guts and spews out nothing but venom toward them. You know what? At least they got your attention Mr. Grumpy pants.

I guess what I'm saying is try to be personal. It takes a lot of time but it helps. Talk to people on Twitter, read the blogs you submit to, and converse with your facebook fans. It's the little things that mean the most.

One of my most prized possessions is a little cd from the Sleepy Horses. It's got a sweet message written on it, addressed to me. And I'd take that over a million faceless one sheets any day.

Girls Rock Camp!

I love Girls Rock Camp. Seriously. There aren't enough woman playing in rock bands and some of that stems from the idea that only boys can play guitar. Or bass. Or drums. And here's Girls Rock Camp, swooping in to help girls build up their confidence in both music and life.

The 2011 Girls Rock Camp ATH camp week will take place Monday, July 25th through Friday, July 29th at the Boys and Girls Club located at 705 Fourth Street in Athens. The Showcase will be on Saturday, July 30th at the 40 Watt.
Camp for the Girls costs $25 dollars to register and $300 for the camp. As you can imagine, not all families that want to send their daughters can afford such a cost. The camp offers scholarships but can only offer as many as they have the budget for. So if you've got some spare change, consider sending some their way. You can donate here. If you're a little short on cash, consider lending your time as an instructor. Either way, you'll help fuel the next generation of awesome musicians. ROCK ON!

Press Release Theatre: Adam Klein's Songworthy Project

Ok guys, check this one out. It's a pretty cool idea from Adam Klein, the guy behind most of the Athens Americana scene. He's wanting YOU to submit song themes, stories, and ideas for an upcoming album related to human rights and sustainable development. So send your ideas in!

Press release below:

Athens, Georgia-based singer/songwriter Adam Klein announces new songwriting initiative, Songworthy, inviting listeners to suggest song themes and content for future Global South-related album
ATHENS, GA--June 30th, 2011--Acclaimed singer/songwriter Adam Klein of Athens announces an unique songwriting project, Songworthy, inviting listeners to contribute song themes and stories for an upcoming album of songs related to topics in international sustainable development and human rights.
Inspired by his travels in developing nations (the Global South) and Peace Corps experience in Mali, West Africa, Klein is dedicated to releasing an album which gives voice to the people of the Global South. The record seeks to express the hopes, challenges, struggles, and ultimately, the rich spirit, dignity, and humanity of the world’s poorest people. The songs will speak about development themes such as water and sanitation, rural public health, squatter communities, human rights movements, as well as particular individuals.
The public are invited to submit song ideas for this album- important issues regarding the needs of the people of the Global South or the story of a specific person whom one deems songworthy based on his/her life and work. Klein will try to write a song about each submitted theme or story for possible inclusion on the as-yet-unnamed album. A list of all suggested song topics contributed, along with information and resources for further learning, will be featured on Klein’s website in connection with the release of the record. To contribute a song topic or storyline, email hellocowboyangel@gmail.com.

Pylon? More? YES!

Ok, it's not technically new Pylon. Any chance of that left when Randy died. But thankfully, there are other Pylon fans in the world and they are talented enough to combine their skills to create this new 7".

Deerhunter covered "Cool" and Calvinist remixed "Yo-Yo." I prefer the originals myself but I have to admit that the new "Yo-Yo" remix had me grooving along today. Apparently, I'm not the only one.

So kick back and rejoice that Jordan's finally figured out how to embed mp3s on this thing. Enjoy your tunes.
